Hunter Pvp Guide (5.3)

Welcome, this is a beginner's guide for people starting out in pvp or recently came back from a hiatus and need a refresher on stat priority.

Mindset and General Arena Tips

Hunters can dish out loads of damage, but that isn't what makes hunters deadly. Hunter's play an interesting role in arena, they are a hybrid between support and cc machine. Treasure scatter-trap, don't let your opponents dispel or eat traps. When facing shadow priests or retribution paladins make sure your teammates cross cc while you scatter-trap the healer. Also don't forget to use your pet's growl ability to eat shamans grounding totems at the right time.

To be the best hunter you can be, you need to get over yourself and stop going for top damage and spend your time trying to remove someone form the game every 30 seconds for as long as possible. Your goal is to have somebody as your focus at all times while at the same time using master's call and roar of sacrifice to your teammates.

Patch 4.3 came with hunter burst and pet cc nerfs while at the same time receiving increased sustained damage trough aspect of the hawk. Binding shot was also added to the marksmanship arsenal while beast mastery lost intimidation, making marksmanship the closest it has ever been to being viable since the launch of Mist of Pandaria.

Talents

Level 15
Narrow Escape is the best option in most situations because it can hurt the other teams positioning and be used for landing traps. The best quality about this talent is that it can't be dispelled unless freedom.

Or

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Chimera is great talent because of the one minute reduction on deterrence yet narrow escape seems to outperform it. I would say this is a good optional talent though.

Level 30
Silencing Shot is generally the best option here. Intimidation is limited by the hunter's pet positioning and tends to have diminishing returns with teammates. Not to mention that intimidation has a 1 minute cooldown.

Level 45

Aspect of the Iron Hawk. No real question here, the passive damage reduction is overall better for survival. For example, while stunned, hunter's have no way of using defensive spells but can still benefit from  passive damage reductions.

Level 60
Thrill of the Hunt is great for keeping focus high. Even if steady and cobra shot are cast-able while moving now, they can still be a pain to cast around pillars.

Level 75
Blink Strikes was significantly nerfed in patch 5.3 but it's still great for Beast Mastery.

Or

A Murder of Crows is probably the best talent for Marksmanship.

Level 90

Glaive Toss is by far my favorite spell because it doesn't have cast time and it has a low cooldown. Overall its a damage increase over powershot but can sometimes break cc.

Or

Powershot is less bursty then before but has a shorter cast time and a lower cooldown. Overall its still great for putting enemies out of position
.

Glyphs
Only explosive trap and revive pet are necessary, the rest depend on your comp and playstyle.

Prime Glyphs
Glyph of Animal Bond: Great for helping healers keep the hunter and his pet alive.
Glyph of Camouflage: Not necessary but great for getting the opener.
Glyph of Explosive Trap: A must have, it can be used to place a healer out of position or knocking dps off the z axis.
Glyph of Solace: Great glyph but not necessary if careful.

Minor Glyphs
Glyph of Aspect of the Cheetah: Great glyph to for getting into good positioning.
Glyph of Revive Pet: A must have in arena, losing a pet can be decisive.

Stats
Resilience is still great but maybe not for gemming, the 200 resil on chest is still viable though. The tyrannical primal diamond is a slight damage decrease from the pure dps meta, but the resil on it is too good to pass up. Use the follow priority when gearing.
BM Stat Priority
3%Hit=3%Expertise>Agility>Pvp Power>CritMastery>Haste>More Expertise>More Hit

MM Stat Priority
3%Hit=3%Expertise>Agility>Pvp Power>Haste>Crit>Mastery>More Expertise>More Hit

Gearing
Gems
Meta - Agile Primal Diamond until you can get Tyrannical Primal Diamond
Red - Delicate Primordial Ruby or Perfect Delicate Pandarian Garnet
Yellow - Deadly Vermilion Onyx or Adept Vermilion Onyx
BlueAssassin's Imperial Amethyst
Cloak -  Enchant Cloak - Accuracy or Superior Critical Strike
Belt - Living Steel Belt Buckle
Legs - Shadowleather Leg Armor
Boots - Enchant Boots - Blurred Speed
Weapon - Enchant Weapon - Glorious Tyranny

Professions
Professions don't really matter in patch 5.3. I would stay away from gathering professions but but anything else is great.

Viable Hunter Comps
Hunter + Enhance + Healer
Hunter + Retribution+ Healer
Hunter + Rogue + Healer
Hunter + Death Knight + Healer
